Preparing for modern demands
From sourcing the location, project planning, facility layout and subsequent building work, to the procurement of machinery, the hiring and training of staff, the designing of site livery and signage and ultimately preparing the laundry for opening, NewGen drew on their expert knowledge to set the objectives and deliver results at each key stage and were pivotal in the development of the site
The NewGen management team sourced a viable site, located on an industrial estate in Yeovil, Somerset. A former yoghurt factory, the 40,000 sq ft building had fallen into a state of disrepair, become badly vandalised and was a local eyesore.
In October 2010 planning permission was secured to redevelop the two-acre site. After hours of meticulous planning, an investment of £7 million, and a facility full of state-of-the-art equipment and technology, Paragon Yeovil was opened in August 2011 becoming one of the largest laundries in the UK, and the most efficient and greenest facilities in Europe.
Creating tangible impressions
As well as improving the image of the site, the laundry has also benefited the local community by employing over 120 people across various production, transport and office roles. General Manager, Lyndon Thomas, adds “We’ve made quite a splash in the area, the majority of staff have been recruited locally which will only continue as our operations expand. NewGen have certainly helped us to enhance our reputation in the region as an attractive and forward thinking employer.”
The laundry houses the biggest computer operated tunnel washer in Europe, made by Kannegiesser at a cost of £1 million, the machine is able to process 40 tonnes of laundry a day. The impressive stats continue with a towering 40ft high, 102,000 litre water tank, a 17 tonne salt tank, four massive gas tumblers and four huge ironers – all of which enables the laundry to process over 30,000 garments and 600,000 pieces of linen a week – that’s the equivalent of over 8,000 hotel rooms.
In December 2011, NewGen invited Sheikh Mohamed Bin Suroor Al Nahyan’s team to tour the facility’s high-tech operations, with the visit helping to seal the deal for NewGen to be contracted to design, build and operate a brand new commercial laundry in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.
“We always design a facility not only to be efficient in design, but also to be customer and staff interfacing. Whenever we show visitors around the Yeovil laundry they seem to be sufficiently impressed!“
